The Pope Between Two Worlds: A Briefing on Pope Francis's Historic Visit to Cuba and the U.S.A.
The Pope’s visit to the United States via Cuba at the end of September will be the most challenging and densely covered week of his pontificate. Within months of brokering the restoration of US-Cuba ties, Francis will be the first pope to visit both countries consecutively. After three days charting a future of independence and freedom for a collapsed communist state, he will spend four days in the global heart of the consumer culture he holds responsible for ruining the planet and prejudicing the poor.
Moving from the periphery to the centre, this a journey of firsts: the first Latin-American and Jesuit pope to visit Cuba, the first pope to address the U.S. Congress, the first pope to visit both Cuba and the U.S. consecutively. This is one time when the adjective ‘historic’ is the only appropriate one.
The briefing will be given by Dr Austen Ivereigh, papal biographer and CV coordinator, returning from a three-day conference and briefing on the US visit in Philadelphia at the end of August. He will be reporting from Cuba and the U.S. during the 19-28 September trip.
Places are limited, and priority will be given to CV speakers and journalists.
